Samford Drops All Three aT Evansville
Nov. 10, 2001 EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After two matches in which the Bulldogs did not win a game, Samford showed signs of life in a hard fought five-game match against Southern Illinois Saturday night. Unfortunately for Samford, the Salukis took game five 15-9 and sent the Bulldogs home with an 0-3 record at the Evansville Invitational. Samford (12-19) dropped its Friday match 3-0 to Morehead State (22-9) and then fell to Evansville (6-23) 3-0 Saturday afternoon. Poor passing continues to plague the Bulldogs. Samford gave up 33 aces over the three matches. Samford played much better in its final match on Saturday recording 11 aces of its own and placing three players in double-figure kills. Whitney Miller led with 17 kills after posting just seven kills in the first two matches. Abby Miner had 14 kills and 11 digs and Shellie Ouldhouse recorded 13 kills and 16 digs against Southern Illinois (11-17). The Bulldogs are 0-8 this season in matches played on a neutral floor and are 2-10 in tournament matches this season. Samford is 10-9 in non-tournament matches. Krista Kettering had 62 assists over the weekend to give her 1,210 for the season which is second on Samford's all-time single-season assists list. She is 163 assists behind Brooke Skinner's 1991 total of 1,373. Also moving into the second position on a single-season list was Stefanie Pickett. Pickett has 110 block assists this year after recording six over the weekend. She is only two behind Melissa Karwowski 1993 total of 112. Angela Smith and Ouldhouse are right behind Pickett in third and fourth place with 93 and 89 block assists respectively.
Samford will be the #6 seed in next week's Atlantic Sun Conference tournament to be held in Boca Raton, Fla. The Bulldogs will face the #3 seed Campbell in the first round on Friday afternoon for the right to play the #2 seed UCF in the semi-finals Friday evening. The Championship game will be on Saturday.
