Bulldogs Sweep BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University used strong blocking and eight service aces to sweep Birmingham-Southern College 15-7, 15-4, 15-13 in volleyball action Monday night at BSC's Striplin Center. Samford (13-16) was led by Whitney Miller, who recorded a match-high15 kills, and Shellie Ouldhouse who added 12 kills, four aces, and four blocks. Stefanie Pickett and Angela Smith tallied five blocks each, and Colleen Donivan had 22 assists. Lacey Daughdrill led the Panthers with seven kills while Kerry Pitts had eight digs and two aces. Samford hit .322 in the match, and BSC struggled at .023. The Bulldogs out blocked the Panthers 10 to 2. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the opening game behind the serve of Ouldhouse, who ran off seven-straight points from the server's box. The Bulldogs would go on to a comfortable 15-7 win. In the middle game, Samford raced out to an 11-0 lead taking advantage of BSC hitting errors. The Panthers hit -.125 in game two as the Bulldogs recorded six blocks and went on to win 15-4. Game three was the closest of the match as both teams battled to 6-6 before Daughdrill got on track and the Panthers went on a 7-3 run to lead 13-9. Samford called a timeout and then rallied for the final six points of the match behind the strong serving and a block that kept BSC hitters frustrated. Miller recorded her 15th kill off the BSC block to complete the comeback and end the match 15-13.
Samford will wrap up the 2000 season in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday. The Bulldogs will face Belmont University in a 2 p.m. match.
