BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell University (14-8, 5-3) rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Samford University (11-15, 6-4) in an Atlantic Sun Conference match-up, Saturday.

Senior Abby Jenkins (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) finished with a season-high 23 kills, adding 12 digs and six blocks while helping Campbell to a crucial conference victory.

The Camels came out and won the opening game thanks to their defense. The Camels held Samford to an .045 hitting percentage in game one, while the Camels hit.244. Games two and three featured a series of lead changes, with Samford holding off Campbell, 30-27 in game two. The Bulldogs were up 27-23 before Campbell stormed back on Kara Lewis' serve to tie game three at 28. Samford then went to senior outside Whitney Miller who helped put the Bulldogs ahead 29-28 before winning the third game 31-29.

Campbell rebounded in game four, relying on their blocking game to take four consecutive points and give them an insurmountable lead. Campbell won the fourth game, 30-22. When middle hitter Kara Lewis downed one of her 17 kills, the Camels closed out game five, 15-10.

Junior Crystal Brim also tallied double-digit kills in the win. Brim added 13 kills, while Jordan Rasmussen finished with nine. Brim led the defense with 16 digs, while setter Amanda Pfeifer finished second with 14 digs and led the team with 58 assists.

Four Bulldogs tallied double digit kills, led by Miller's 19. Middle blocker Shellie Ouldhouse added 17 kills, while Angela Smith and Abby Miner added 15 and 11, respectively. Setter Krista Kettering led all Bulldogs with 58 assists.

Campbell needs to win one of its two remaining matches to clinch a berth for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, which will be played Nov. 15-16 at Florida Atlantic.

 

 

The match was Samford's last conference match of the season, but the Bulldogs have five non-conference matches remaining before the league tournament. Samford will play at North Carolina A&T, Sunday, before returning home host Senior Night against Grambling, Monday.
