Samford Defeats Campbell in Five-Game Marathon
Oct. 14, 2000 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Whitney Miller became the first Samford volleyball player to record 30 kills in one match as three Bulldogs had over 20 kills to help Samford defeat Campbell 3-2 in Trans America Athletic Conference volleyball action at Seibert Hall on Saturday. Miller added 18 digs to her school record 30 kills and Shellie Ouldhouse had a career-high 29 kills and 24 digs. But it was the play of freshman Ashley Fulton in games four and five that led the Bulldogs to victory. Fulton finished the match with career-high 25 kills and 20 digs. Freshman setter Krista Kettering also broke a school-record with 87 assists in the match as Samford improves to 10-12 on the year and 2-2 in the TAAC. Campbell (12-12, 3-2 TAAC) had four players record double-doubles. Kara Lewis led the way with 28 kills and 20 digs, Abby Jenkins had 19 kills and 27 digs, Tinsley Gordon had 11 kills and 15 digs, and Sarah Paterson had 10 kills and 19 digs. Games one and two took 45 minutes each to play as Campbell won the opener 18-16 and Samford took the second game 20-18. Miller and Ouldhouse combined for 38 kills in the first two games while Lewis had 18 kills after game two. Game three was the odd game in the match as Campbell won 15-0 as Samford had 15 hitting errors in the middle game to only one for the Camels. Samford rebounded in game four thanks to the effort of Fulton stepping up and contributing eight kills in game four alone. The Bulldogs raced out to an 8-5 led, but after a Camel timeout, Campbell came back to tie the game at 9-9. The Camels would eventually gain match point at 14-13 but a Fulton kill kept the Bulldogs alive. Samford would eventually take game four 17-15.
The Bulldogs saved their best for last as Samford hit .300 in game five to take the rally scored game 15-9.
"I am so excited about the way we fought back," said Samford head coach Vickie Nichols. "Ashley really made a difference for us in those last two games. Miller and Shellie led the way but we don't win that match without Ashley." "I just wanted to win," said Fulton of her performance. "I knew I needed to step up. I told myself if I can put one down, I can put them all down." Samford will step out of conference to begin a four-match road trip on Tuesday as it travels to Montgomery to play Alabama State. The Bulldogs will return to TAAC play on Thursday at Florida Atlantic. |
