ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State University used a strong serve and timely blocking to defeat Samford Friday night in Trans America Athletic Conference volleyball action.

Anna Popenko led the Lady Panthers with 15 kills while Molly Sapp added 14 kills as GSU improves to 22-6 on the year and 4-0 in the TAAC.

Whitney Miller led all hitters with 16 kills and all diggers with 13 digs. Shellie Ouldhouse had 11 kills and Angela Smith added 10 kills. Samford drops to 9-12 on the season and 1-2 in the TAAC.

Georgia State took a hard fought game one 15-12. The Lady Panthers went on a 7-2 run with the game tied at 7-7. The Bulldogs fought off three game points to come to within three points before Sapp had a kill to give GSU the opener.

Samford jumped ahead 4-1 in game two but the Lady Panthers went on a ten point run thanks to a sloppy Samford serve receive. Georgia State out hit the Bulldogs .300 to .179 in the middle game.

The Bulldogs fought back in game three to take a 7-3 lead and force a Georgia State timeout. GSU battled back to 11-10 due to some questionable officiating and took the lead at 13-12 and went on to win 15-13.

Samford will try to bounce back at home on Saturday as the Bulldogs will host Campbell University in a 5 p.m. match.
