Auburn Hands Samford Fourth Straight Loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Brooke McCarley recorded a match-high 16 kills to lead three Auburn Tigers in double figures as Auburn swept Samford 3-0 in volleyball action at Seibert Hall Tuesday night.

The win for Auburn broke a four-match losing streak and gave the Tigers an 8-7 record. Samford dropped its fourth straight to fall to 8-10.

Samford played with energy in the first game and used five service aces to turnaround a 4-2 deficit into a 9-4 lead. The Bulldogs would lead 13-9 before Auburn regrouped and tied the game at 13. After a kill for a point by Ashley Fulton the Bulldogs had a service error on game point. Auburn took advantage of the miscue and took the next three points to win 16-14.

Auburn controlled game two from the beginning by racing out to a 7-0 lead. The Tigers took the middle game, 15-3, by hitting .440 (14 kills, 3 errors, 25 attacks).

Samford would not go quietly in game three. The Bulldogs took a 7-4 advantage before the bigger Tigers finally took the finale 15-9.

Auburn's starting lineup was an average of three and a half inches taller than Samford's. The Tigers were able to record 11 blocks in the match to three for the Bulldogs. Samford made up the difference from the service line as the Bulldogs totaled seven aces to two for Auburn.

Fulton led the Bulldogs with 10 kills and eight digs while Krista Kettering had 28 assists and 11 digs for Samford.

The Bulldogs will begin Trans America Athletic Conference play on Friday as they host Stetson in a 5 p.m. match. Auburn will return to SEC action Friday as it travels to Mississippi State.
