Samford Downs Tennessee State 3-0
Sept. 22, 2000 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Whitney Miller and Stefanie Pickett each had a match-high 11 kills as Samford University defeated Tennessee State 15-2, 15-5, and 15-4 on the opening day of the State Farm/Samford Invitational Friday night at Seibert Hall. Samford improved to 7-6 on the season by hitting .330 in the match and recording eight service aces. Tennessee State dropped to 0-9 with the loss. Miller had 11 kills on 15 attacks and hit .667 and Pickett had 11 kills on 18 attacks for a .500 percentage to lead the Bulldogs. Ashley Fulton added nine kills and 10 digs and Shaliece Hall had six kills for Samford. Tennessee State was led by Shartondra Jackson who had five kills and Sheena Broome who added seven digs. Samford dominated from the beginning as it jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game one. The Bulldogs had 15 kills and only one error in 21 attacks for a .667 percentage in the opening game. In the first match of the tournament, Troy State defeated Western Carolina 15-13, 15-13, and 16-14. Troy State improved to 8-3 while Western Carolina dropped to 2-8. The tournament will continue Saturday morning as Troy State will play Tennessee State at 9 a.m. and Samford will face Western Carolina at 11 a.m. Western Carolina will turn around and face Tennessee State at 2 p.m. and Samford will play Troy State in the final match of the tournament at 4 p.m.
Saturday is also Girl Scout Day at Samford as the Cahaba Girl Scouts will attend sports clinics and attend the volleyball tournament.
