OXFORD, Miss. - Coming off its first win of the season, Samford could not keep the momentum going in its second game Friday against Arkansas State at the Magnolia Classic.

Arkansas State (3-2) came out strong by hitting .433 in game one and jumped out to a 13-4 lead and went on to win the opening game 30-19.

Samford (1-5) battled back in the second game behind the hitting of freshmen Hilary Gary who record five kills in the first two games. The Bulldogs led 20-16 before ASU went on a 9-5 run to tie the game at 25. Samford had game point at 30-29 before a costly missed serve tied the game at 30. The Lady Indians took the final two points and took a commanding two games to none lead.

Samford and Arkansas State again battled nip and tuck in game three. The Bulldogs came away with a 30-28 win behind Shellie Ouldhouse who had five of her team-high 15 kills in game three. The Bulldogs also blocked well in the third game combining for four of their eight blocks.

Arkansas State jumped out to a 8-3 lead in game four before Samford went on a 13-2 run to take a 16-10 advantage. The games momentum turned again as the Lady Indians battled back to tie the game at 25. Both teams sided out to 28-28 before ASU took the final two points of the game and the match.

Arkansas State had three players with double figure kills led by Leslie Elkins with 20. The Lady Indians out hit the Bulldogs .303 to .229 and out dug the Bulldogs 52-28.

Samford will face Southern Mississippi and UT-Martin on Saturday in the final two games of the Magnolia Invitational. The Southern Miss. match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the UT- Martin match scheduled for 5 p.m.
