Samford Downs Alabama State In Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford junior Whitney Miller had 18 kills to lead three Bulldogs in double figures as Samford defeated Alabama State 15-2, 16-14, 15-8 in volleyball action at Seibert Hall Tuesday night.

Miller was the leading hitter in the match with a .667 hitting percentage while junior Shellie Ouldhouse and freshman Ashley Fulton each added 10 kills for the Bulldogs who improved to 3-1 on the season.

Samford won game one 15-2 after breaking open a 2-2 tie with 13 unanswered points. Alabama State (0-4) came out strong in game two and took a 12-3 lead behind the play of Hakika Bookter who led the Lady Hornets with 13 kills. Samford battled back scoring nine-straight points to tie the game at 12. Both team traded the next four points and the game was tied at 14. Samford took the final two points and the game 16-14. In game three, the Bulldogs jumped on top 3-0 before Alabama State made a three point run to tie the score. Samford would score 12 of the next 17 points to wrap up the match.

Samford's win was its second straight and its 13th straight win over Alabama State. The match marked the third time Samford has played Alabama State in its home opener. The Bulldogs have won all three times.

The Bulldogs will host the State Farm Classic at Seibert Hall on Friday and Saturday. Samford will host Belmont at 7 p.m. on Friday before playing Tennessee-Martin and Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.
