Bulldogs Place Second at Micro-Tel/Winthrop Invitational
Sept. 2, 2000 ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Samford Bulldogs rebounded from a loss to Winthrop University to defeat Bethune-Cookman College to claim second place at the Micro-tel/Winthrop Invitational with a 2-1 record Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C. Bulldog juniors Shellie Ouldhouse and Whitney Miller were each named to the all-tournament team as Ouldhouse led the Bulldogs in kills in each of the three matches. She had 12 kills in 28 attacks against Bethune-Cookman and finished the tournament with 37 kills. Miller had 29 kills in the three matches including 10 in 17 attacks against Bethune-Cookman. Samford dropped the opening match of the day 15-9, 15-5, 15-10 to an energized Winthrop team. The Lady Eagles strong serving limited Samford to its lowest hitting percentage of the tournament. The Bulldogs bounced back in the second match of the afternoon to down Bethune-Cookman 15-9, 15-11, 15-3. Samford held the Lady Cats to just a .063 hitting percentage and recorded five aces. The Bulldogs defeated East Carolina 3-2 on Friday night. Freshman setter Krista Kettering made the first start of her career against Bethune Cookman, who lost all three of its matches, and handed out 19 assists before Colleen Donivan enter the match in game three to dish out 10 more assists for the Dogs. "This was a good weekend for us," said Samford head coach Vickie Nichols, "We did not play as well as we are capable but we won two matches and had an opportunity for all of our players to see action." Samford, East Carolina, and Winthrop each finished the tournament with 2-1 records. Winthrop was declared the champion becasue it had lost the fewest games in the tournament. Samford then won the head-to-head tiebreaker over ECU.
Samford will open up its home schedule on Tuesday night at Seibert Hall against Alabama State in a 7 p.m. match.
