Volleyball Falls to SFA at Rice Tournament
Sept. 1, 2001 HOUSTON, Texas - ,Two inches cost Samford a win in game two but it was mistakes that cost the Bulldogs a chance to beat Stephen F. Austin Saturday morning at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational. Abby Miner's attack with the score 30-29 in game two had apparently given the Bulldogs a 32-30 win but the second referee said that Miner's foot was on the attack line and she was called for an illegal back row attack that tied the game at 30. Whitney Miller responded with one of her match-high 14 kills to give Samford a 30-29 lead, but SFA scored the next three points to win the game 32-30 and go up two games to none. Stephen F. Austin (2-1) used the momentum from game two to build an 8-1 lead in game three. The Lady Jacks went on win the game 30-13 as Samford had a negative hitting percentage in the final game. The new rally scoring system in volleyball means that missed serves are a point for the opposition. In game one, the Bulldogs missed five serves and dropped the game 30-25.
Samford will conclude the tournament at 3 p.m. today against the University of Houston.
