Women's Tennis Pleased With First Round at Bulldog Open
Nov. 1, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-It finally felt like fall Friday as the Samford women's tennis team hosted 11 schools in the Fall 2002 edition of the Bulldog Open. The players huddled together under blankets while they waited to play, but there was plenty of competitive play on the court. In the "A" Flight, Emily Nunnally defeated Jacksonville State's Jessica Gomez 6-3, 6-4 before losing to JSU's Sally Pearson 6-4, 6-4. Pearson defeated SU's Katie Crawford 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Jennifer Pharr reached the semi-finals in the "B" Flight by beating Whitney Carrol of Shorter College 7-5, 6-1, and Wallace State's Amy Meeker 6-1, 6-1. Jenny Walls lost to Shorter's Tori Malone 6-1, 6-2. Lisa Stertzer lost to Carrie Gracey of Alabama-Huntsville 6-4, 6-2. Jamie Aid reached the semis of the "C" bracket by defeating UAH's Monica Morris 7-5, 6-3 after a first-round bye. Lane Santa Cruz lost to Montavello's Kristen Smith 6-2, 6-4. The semi-final and consolation singles matches will be played Saturday morning and early afternoon. Doubles play begins at 3:30 Saturday. The singles and doubles finals will be Sunday.
