BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's and women's tennis teams learned Tuesday afternoon that they will play Florida State in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships, May 9-11. The announcement was made Tuesday at 1 p.m. on a selection show aired by ESPN News. The Bulldog women (20-5, 12-0 OVC) will meet up with host team Florida State (18-7), a 14-seed, on Friday, May 9, while the Bulldog men (15-8, 11-1 OVC) will face the 14th-seeded Florida State men (19-6) on Saturday, May 11. Starting times for the tournament are yet to be determined. The winner of the women's match will go on to play the winner of South Florida (18-6) and Texas 18-6). The winner of the men's match will play the winner of South Alabama (15-8) and Alabama (19-9) in the second round. This marks the first time that both the men's and women's squads from Samford have made it to the Tournament in the same year. As Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Champions, the two teams received the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. First- and second- round competition will be held May 9-11 at host sites with the winner of each site advancing to the Division I Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., hosted by the University of Tulsa. Teams will play single-elimination matches at each of the 16 first- and second-round sites and the finals site to determine the national champion. The matches will be regulation dual matches with three (3) eight-game, pro-set doubles played for one team point, followed by six (6) singles matches, each valued at one team point, played best of three sets. Regular scoring will be used and a 12-point tiebreaker will be played at eight games all in doubles and at six games all in singles.
