Samford Tennis Opens Conference Play Against In-State Rival

April 3, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's and women's tennis teams continue conference play Tuesday as they take on in-state rival Jacksonville State. Both Bulldog team are currently undefeated in conference play, and look to keep that streak alive today in Jacksonville, Ala.

The Samford women (9-3, 7-0 OVC) come off a tough home loss to cross-town foe UAB. The Bulldogs dropped the match, 4-3, to the Blazers last Wednesday at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion on Samford's campus. The Blazers swept the doubles point and the Bulldogs were able to grab wins at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 courts, but it was not enough to capture the overall win.

The Samford men (11-5, 6-0 OVC) have had a week of rest after claiming their fifth and sixth conference wins over Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State two weeks ago.

The Gamecocks (men - 11-5, 5-1 OVC, women - 8-10, 4-3 OVC) were Samford's first conference opponent this season as well as the first team to play in the brand new Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion. The Samford men defeated their opponent 6-1 while, due to inclement weather, the Samford women were only able to play four matches. However, the Bulldog women took four straight singles matches to win, 4-0.

Match play between the Bulldogs and the Gamecocks starts at 1 p.m. with the women kicking things off. The men will start play at 1:30 p.m. A full recap and results will be available on www.samfordsports.com at the conclusion of the match.
