Samford Women Down Jacksonville State, 6-1

March 13, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford women's tennis team began an undefeated conference streak Thursday night with a win over rival Jacksonville State. The win is the second consecutive conference win for the Bulldogs and completes a clean sweep of the Gamecocks as the Samford men took down the Jacksonville State men in a 6-1 match earlier in the day. Both the men and women defeated the Gamecocks last month in a non-conference match-up in Jacksonville, Ala.

The Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0 OVC) swept the doubles point from the Gamecocks while taking five of six singles matches from their opponent. Anna Jackson took a fall at the No. 1 position (6-4, 6-4) but Taylor Morgan grabbed a win over reigning OVC Player of the Week Martina Dessbesell at the No. 2 spot which started a streak of wins for the Bulldog women. Taylor Morgan, Andrie Meiring, Katie Weaver and Lindsey Mallory had big wins over their opponents while Lindsay Reidenbach went three sets with Julianna Renesto before coming out with the win.

The Samford women are back in action this weekend as they join the men for another home conference match. The Bulldogs will take on Austin Peay Saturday with the women starting things off at 10 a.m., followed by the men at approximately 1 p.m., at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion. The Bulldog women will also host Houston on Sunday. Match play for that meeting is set for 12 p.m.
