Samford Women's Tennis Defeats UT Martin In First Conference Battle

March 8, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford women's tennis team locked in a seventh win Saturday with a 6-1 defeat over conference rival UT Martin at the Pat M. Courington Pavilion. The win is the first of the Bulldogs in conference play, handing the Skyhawks their first Ohio Valley Conference loss. The Samford women are now 7-2 on the season, 1-0 in OVC play.

Samford grabbed the doubles point, winning two out of three, and fought hard to take five of six singles matches to add to the team score.

"We definitely showed our youth and inexperience at times today, both in the singles and the doubles," Samford head coach David Vest said, "but we also fought back in certain three-set situations like a team with several years experience. So, overall, I am pleased with how we are progressing as a team. Martin is a good team, so its good to get our first conference victory today, with a win over a quality opponent."

Those three-set situations came in the first four courts in singles play. Anna Jackson, Taylor Morgan, Andrie Meiring and Katie Weaver all played extended matches going three sets with their opponents. Morgan, Meiring and Weaver managed to edge out wins while Jackson suffered a tough loss at the No. 1 court.

The Samford women will hit the courts again, Thursday, March 13, as they join the men in taking on in-state rival Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs met up with the Gamecocks in late February for a non-conference match-up and now look to add to their win column with a conference win over the rival. Match play between the two team begins at 2 p.m. at the Pat M. Courington Pavilion.
