Samford Takes Care of Southern Miss, 7-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Samford women's tennis team defeated Southern Miss 7-0 and then got some good news from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association to improve to 7-2 on the season. Samford head coach Glen Fanelli protested Samford's 4-3 loss to Birmingham Southern on Feb. 20. The Samford coach felt BSC had tampered with its line up to give it an advantage in the match. The ITA agreed and awarded the match to Samford by forfeit. In its match at Southern Miss, the Samford women took care of business on the court. Hattiesburg native Emily Nunnally defeated Shawny Price 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at number one singles. At number three Katherine Jayroe won a grueling three set match with Olivia Berry 7-6, 3-6, 10-8. The Bulldogs will put their four-match win streak on the line on Wednesday in Hammond, La., Samford will face Lehigh at 9 a.m. and S.E. Louisiana at 2 p.m. Samford's 7-2 start is the best start since the 1996 season when Samford finished 11-6 under head coach Pat Breen. Samford 7, Southern Miss. 0
