Samford Women's Tennis Downs Jacksonville State, 6-1

Feb. 26, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ---- The Samford women's tennis team faced ugly conditions of 40 degree weather and 20 to 30 mph winds Tuesday in a non-conference contest against in-state rival Jacksonville State. Samford overcame the weather obstacles and walked away with a 6-1 victory, bouncing back from a tough loss against UAB on Sunday.

Although Samford and Jacksonville State are both in the Ohio Valley Conference, the two teams counted this match as a non-conference match since the OVC season does not start until next month.

The Bulldogs took two out of three doubles matches with Morgan/Mallory and Meiring/Kirven getting 8-5 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.

In singles action, Anna Jackson fell at the number position but the Bulldogs then captured wins in all of the last five courts. Taylor Morgan stepped in for Samford's usual No. 2 player, Rebecca Kirven and ignited the five match sweep with a win over Martina Dessbesell, 6-2, 6-4.

The Samford women will be back in action on Saturday, March 1, as they travel South Carolina to take on future Southern Conference opponent, College of Charleston. Match play begins at 3 p.m. ET.
