Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win

Samford swept all three doubles matches as the Bulldogs defeated Montevallo, 6-1, in women's tennis action at Montevallo, Saturday morning. Five Bulldogs won their singles matches to lead the Bulldogs to a season opening win. "I was very proud of the girls coming out and winning so strong," Samford head coach Terri Sisk said. "Every one of them gave 110 percent on every shot." Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford defeated Montvello's Yamel Ruiz and Melodi Ina Hong, 8-1 to win No. 1 doubles. Samford's Lisa Stertzer and Jenny Walls won the No.2 Doubles match, 8-6 over Lauren Ryerson and Krisitn Smith. In the No.3 doubles, Samford's Jen Pharr and Jamie Aid defeated Ashley Moore and Carla Hollaway, 8-1. In singles action, Crawford defeated Ina Hong, 6-1 and 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. Stertzer took the No.3 spot, 6-1 and 6-0 from Moore. In the No. 4 position, Pharr defeated Montevallo's Ryerson, 6-0 and 6-0. In the No. 5 match, Walls edged out Smith, 7-6 and 6-2. Samford's Lane Santa Cruz won the No.6 match, 6-2 and 6-2 over Holloway. Samford's lone loss came at No. 1 spot when Ruiz defeated Nunnally, 7-6 and 6-3.
The Bulldogs return to action when they travel to Jacksonville State for their Atlantic Sun Conference Opener Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
