Bulldog Talk With Susanna Meyer

Oct. 31, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Each week heading into the 2007 Samford softball season, a different player will be highlighted in an edition of "Bulldog Talk", a question-and-answer session with one this year's players. This week's featured player is senior pitcher Susanna Meyer.

The Samford softball team will begin play in its 2007 season in early February at the Florida State Tournament. The opening date is roughly 15 weeks away and each of Samford's 15 softball players will have their turn to be featured in the inaugural edition of "Bulldog Talk".

Meyer, a native of Davie, Fla., is the first Samford softball player to be featured this year. She is a senior sociology major and is one of the most decorated pitchers in school history. Meyer is currently ranked among the top-five players in Samford history in wins, strikeouts, shutouts and saves.

The following is a transcript from Meyer's edition of "Bulldog Talk".

How is the year going so far?
"In terms of the team, it's been a lot better start than in the past. I think we are more dominating and motivated this year to make a comeback. We are determined to make a statement to the OVC. Personally, I am just working on things that I need to fix before the spring and I plan on fighting back strong from last year."

For three years you have had the same coaching staff, but for your senior year Coach Ketcham brought in a new staff. What has that been like?
"It's been a lot different. It is sometimes hard to transition from doing it one way to a complete opposite way the next season and not knowing what to expect, but I just handle my jobs and responsibilities and do what I'm told, regardless of who is coaching and I trust anyone whom Coach (Beanie) Ketcham trusts."

Describe this year's team.
"This year's team is closer, trustworthy, way more motivated and determined. We have more desire and heart. There is so much more trust out there and confidence among us all."

What is it like being a senior on this team?
"I feel more responsibility, but I'm able and willing to take that responsibility. I just hope that I can show my teammates how much heart and determination it takes to make it."

What game or road trip are you looking forward to the most this year?
"I don't even know the schedule yet! I'm definitely not looking forward to anything over eight hours! No, for real, I can't wait to play Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State because I love beating them."

What would be the picture-perfect ending for this year?
"Team wise: To be OVC champs and to make it to the College World Series. Personally: To come back and finish my college career with a great season."

Check out next week's edition of "Bulldog Talk", as Samford softball's featured player will be sophomore second baseman Rachael Reeves.

Reeves started 47 games last season as a true freshman and finished second on the team in stolen bases.
