Softball Sweeps Shelton State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team sweep a double header from Shelton State as the Bulldogs continue to prepare for the 2002 season.

Samford took game one 8-0 behind the pitching of sophomore Erin Landsburg and hitting of sophomore catcher Angela Bednark. Landsburg pitched six shutout innings giving up three singles and a walk while striking out two batters. Bednark was 3-3 with a pair of doubles, a two-run home run, and three RBI. Senior Janet Middleton went 2-3 with a RBI-double and a walk. She scored twice. Junior Michelle Wright was 1-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

The Bulldogs took the nightcap 6-0 in a game that was cut short by darkness. Samford scored four runs in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. Wright who was 3-3 in the second game, got the four-run rally started with a lead-off single. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Middleton, Kelly Smith, and Dana Saffles each had RBI hits to give Samford a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs added to the lead in the fifth courtesy of a two-run home run by junior transfer Deanna Resmondo.

Amber Fuller, another junior transfer, pitched a no-hitter in game two. She threw five no-hit innings giving up three walks and a hit batsmen while striking out six Shelton State batters.

Samford will wrap up its short fall season next Friday with a double header against Northwest Shoals Community College at 3:30 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.
