Carter Named OVC Pitcher Of The Week

May 5, 2008

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Samford softball player Margaret Carter received Ohio Valley Conference honors Monday as the Bulldogs' true freshman was named the OVC pitcher of the week.

Carter, a native of Welaka, Fla., finished the week with a perfect 3-0 record and tallied a miniscule 0.57 earned run average. She also picked up all three victories in the Bulldogs' must-win, three-game sweep at UT Martin, and only allowed one earned run in 12.1 innings.

In Samford's key three-game series against UT Martin, Carter came on in relief in all three games and didn't allow a walk. She tallied five strikeouts and picked up her fourth win in her last four appearances. In her first win Saturday, she pitched 5.2 innings and only allowed one earned run on four hits.

Carter also picked up the final two victories of the series and didn't give up a run in 6.2 combined innings. She only allowed three hits in the last two games of the three-game sweep and concluded the week with a team-best 0.57 earned run average.

Tennessee Tech's Stephanie Fischer was named the OVC player of the week.

She finished the week with an astounding .800 batting average and added eight RBI and four runs scored. Fischer hit three home runs and tallied three doubles as Tennessee Tech earned a three-game sweep at Austin Peay.

So far this season, Samford has earned four OVC player of the week awards. Fellow-freshman pitcher Kayla Burris was named pitcher of the week Feb. 11 and March 3, while sophomore Amanda Barrs earned player of the week honors April 14.

The Samford University softball team will next be in action Thursday at 10 a.m., as the Bulldogs begin play in the 2008 OVC Tournament against the third-seeded Eastern Kentucky Colonels at University Field in Jacksonville, Ala.

Earlier this season, Samford went 1-2 against Eastern Kentucky in a weekend series held in Richmond, Ky.
