Samford Hosts UAB on Senior Day

The Samford softball team will try to set a new school record for wins in one season and even up the season series at two games apiece when it hosts UAB at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Field on Tuesday. The Bulldogs (26-17) will honor their three seniors Michelle Wright, Deanna Resmondo, and Amber Fuller prior to the game. Fuller has played two seasons at Samford after transferring from UAH. Fuller has a 14-14 career record and is fifth in Samford history with six shutouts and 152 strikeouts. Resmondo has also played two seasons at Samford after transferring from Jeff.State. Resmondo has the highest fielding percentage in Samford history as she has made just four errors in two seasons. She has a .305 career batting average with 17 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 33 RBI. Wright is the only four year senior on the squad. She is starting the 200th game of her career today. She owns career records for most runs scored (87), most walks (49), and most RBI (78), as well as, the single-season record for most doubles (18 in 2000) and most RBI (33 in 2003). She is in the career top five in 10 categories. The Bulldogs tied their school record for most wins in a season on Sunday with a 6-5 game two victory over Mercer to give Samford 26 wins on the year. However, the Bulldogs lost game one 2-1 eliminating any chance to make the conference tournament. Angela Bednark earned A-Sun player of the week honors going 6-12 from the plate over the last four games and had two RBI against Mercer. Kelly Smith broke the single-season record for runs scored in a season as she crossed the plate for the 32nd time this season. The Blazers have won six straight to improve to 27-23 on the season. Sara Christophel leads the team with a .303 batting average. Kelli Thompson and Beth Mullins each have four home runs for the Blazers. UAB has been led by its pitching all season long. The Blazers have a .246 team batting average but their pitching staff has a 2.26 ERA. Kerri Foster is 13-12 with a 1.92 ERA. She has five shutouts and has struck out 127 batters in 160.2 innings. Thompson is 12-7 with a 1.88 ERA. She has three shutouts including one against Samford on March 18. She has fanned 99 batters in 140.2 innings. UAB is 9-12 in Conference UAB and will wrap up the season this weekend at home against Southern Mississippi.
Both teams will wrap up the regular season at home over the weekend. Samford finishes up with a double-header against Mobile on Friday at 4 p.m. UAB concludes the season with C-USA series against Southern Miss with a double-header on Saturday and a single-game on Sunday.
