Samford Hosts Jax State in Key Double Header

Samford and Jacksonville State each had an extra day of rest thanks to Mother Nature on Tuesday. The two teams will square off at Bulldog Field at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in an important Atlantic Sun Conference double-header for both teams. Samford is 20-11 overall and 6-4 in the A-Sun and are percentage points behind Jacksonville State who is 29-5 overall and 5-3 in the A-Sun. Both teams are battling for one of the six spots in the A-Sun Tournament. The Bulldogs are coming off a pair of extra inning wins at Gardner-Webb over the weekend. Deanna Resmondo and Kelly Smith both went 3-7 in the series with two extra base hits. Smith hit her fourth home run of the year in game two while Resmondo drove in the tying and go ahead runs in the second game. Trisha Holman made her return to Gardner-Webb memorable as she had the tying and go ahead RBI's in the first game. Samford is now 4-1 in extra inning conference games this season. Smith is now third on the single-season doubles list as she has pounded out 14 doubles this season. Michelle Wright had 18 doubles in the 2001 season. Smith is tied for the A-Sun lead in doubles with Mercer's Nikki Bowery. Sarah Godfrey is eighth in the conference with 10 doubles. Samford has played three-straight extra inning games and five of Samford's 10 Atlantic Sun games have gone extra innings. Samford is 9-2 in one run games this season. The Gamecocks saw a 10-game winning streak end with a 2-0 loss to Georgia State in the second game of a double header on April 3. Pitching has been the key to JSU's success this season as its pitchers have tossed 18 shutouts so far this year. They have given up more than two runs just four times this season. The staff leads the A-Sun with a 0.77 ERA. The Gamecocks also lead the A-Sun in fielding with a .980 fielding percentage. Melinda McDonald leads the team with a .349 batting average. She has three home runs and 21 RBI. Janae Bonin and Breanne Oleman have each pounded five home runs for JSU. In the circle, Tera Ross is 14-2 with a 0.70 ERA while Veronica Davis is 11-3 with an 0.73 ERA.
Jacksonville State holds an 18-10 advantage all-time against Samford. The two teams split last season's double header in Jacksonville. The time the teams face each other in Birmingham they also split a double header in 2001.
