Softball Takes Two in UTC Sonic Challenge

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Samford University's women's softball swept its first two games of the UT-Chattanooga 2002 Sonic Challenge on Friday, defeating Western Kentucky 2-1 and A-Sun rival Belmont 9-0 at Frost Stadium.

Samford (8-7) used Abi Casillo's 2-for-3 effort at the plate and the Bulldog defense played six shutout innings after the first to knock off WKU(3-3) in game one. Erin Landsburg (4-4) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits while striking out two and walking one.

In game five, the Bulldogs out-hit Belmont (2-7) eight to one and got solid performances at the plate from Janet Middleton and Dana Saffles. Middleton went 3-for-3 with one RBI and scored twice and Saffles added a 2-for-3 effort while driving in three runs. On the mound, Amber Fuller (4-3) held the Bruins to one hit while striking out one and walking three.

The Bulldogs play three games on Saturday, facing host Chattanooga at 11:15 a.m., followed by Evansville at 1:30 p.m. and Liberty at 3:45 p.m.
