Softball Swept by Ga. Tech on Senior Day
April 24, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Michelle Wright hit a solo home run in the seventh inning but that was the only run the Bulldogs could muster as Georgia Tech swept the Bulldogs 7-1 and 6-0 on senior day at Bulldog Field on Wednesday. Samford (20-30) said goodbye to its winningest senior class in its history. The class of 2002 averaged 22 wins a season in four years in Birmingham. Janet Middleton had two hits and Mindy Shunnarah had a single in game one in their final games at Bulldog Field. Georgia Tech's improved to 43-15 behind Jessica Sallinger (20-9) who tossed a one-hit gem in game two, becoming the first Tech pitcher to post a 20-win season. Erin Voeltz (16-6) gave up just five hits and one run in the opener. In the opening contest, the Jackets took advantage of three third-inning errors by Samford to take a 2-0 lead. The Jackets did not have a hit in the inning. Jamie Frost extended the lead to 3-0 with a home run to center in the top of the fourth. Frost also played a big part in a four-run fifth inning, as she tripled down the right field line to score Tasha Waugh who had a RBI single earlier in the frame. Sara Wissmann and Tara Neff also singled to drive in runs in the inning. The Jackets' hot bats carried over into game two, as Tech posted three runs in the top of the first. Lindsay Wood brought the first run home on a RBI single, while a Wissmann double plated Tara Knudsen, who singled earlier in the inning, and Wood. Mimi Utt pushed the lead to 4-0 with her second homer of the season in the top of the second.
Tech added two more runs in the third, as Wood got the rally started with a double. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Reddick, who was safe on a Bulldog error. Wood scored on a sac fly to right field by Waugh, and Reddick later came home on a single by Frost.
Samford will wrap up the 2002 season on Sunday when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for a 3 p.m. double header against Tennessee. |
