Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Amber Fuller tossed a one-hit shutout in game two against Belmont as the Bulldogs and Bruins split a pair of Atlantic Sun softball games at Bulldog Field on Tuesday.

It was the second time this season Fuller (10-9) has shutout Belmont. She threw a five inning one hitter against the Bruins on Feb. 22, in a 9-0 victory. On Tuesday, it took a sacrifice fly by Kelly Smith in the bottom of the seventh inning to give score Mindy Shunnarah with the games' only run. Fuller struck out six Bruins and walked three while only giving up a single to Christi Davis in the top of the third inning.

Belmont's Carla Cotham (4-8) also had a one-hitter going until the seventh when Shunnarah laced a lead off single into center field. Janet Middleton followed with a base hit up the middle to put runners at first and second with no one out. Michelle Wright sacrificed the runners to second and third before Smith's fly ball to left center field scored Shunnarah to give Samford a 1-0 victory.

In the first game, Mandy Miles (5-9) pitched seven shutout innings giving up just four hits in a 2-0 Belmont victory. Davis led off the game with a single and LeAnna Crandell lined a double to right field to place runners at second and third with one out. Virginia Blocker hit a sacrifice fly to score Davis from third with the games' first run. In the fifth inning, Davis laced a two out triple down the right field line and scored on a RBI-single by Allison Alvarez.

Erin Landsburg (9-16) took the loss for the Bulldogs giving up nine hits and striking out six batters. It was the third game in a row that the Bulldogs have been shut out in a game that Landsburg has pitched. Samford has not scored in Landsburg's last 25 innings of work

The Bulldogs are now 19-25 on the season and 4-10 in Atlantic Sun play. Belmont moves to 22-32, 3-11 in the conference. The Bulldogs will travel to Jacksonville State on Thursday for an important 4 p.m. double header with the Gamecocks.
