FAU Overpowers Samford
April 11, 2002 BIRMINGHAM. Ala. - No. 11 ranked Florida Atlantic hit five home runs off Samford pitching to sweep an Atlantic Sun Conference softball double header 7-0 and 4-0 at Bulldog Field Thursday evening. Pam Mazzarella got Florida Atlantic (46-7, 9-1 A-Sun) going with an RBI-single in the third inning of game one to score Heather Wright with an unearned run. Michelle Shirah hit a solo home run and Nikki Myers added a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give FAU a 5-0 lead. The Owls added two runs in the sixth as Wright had an RBI-single and Myers a sacrifice fly. In game two all four of FAU's runs came via the long ball. Mazzarella had a solo shot and Jennifer Piazza hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run second inning. Ninya Ybarra added a solo blast in the fifth inning. Samford (17-23, 2-8 A-Sun) managed just four hits in the two games off FAU pitchers Candice Freel and Myers. The Bulldogs had chances in game one as they had runs at second and third with one out in the first inning and had the bases loaded with one out in the third inning but Freel (20-3) pitched her way out of both jams with out allowing a run. Myers (26-4) was perfect through six innings before Amber Fuller lined a single to center field in the seventh to break up the no-hitter. Sarah Godfrey reached on an error to put Bulldogs at first and second with no one out. Myers then struck out the side to finish with 14 strikeouts.
Fuller, Dana Saffles, and Rebekah Phillips each had singles in game one for the Bulldogs who will face UCF in a double header at 4 p.m. on Friday at Bulldog field.
