Softball Drops two at Troy State
April 1, 2003 Troy, Ala. - The Samford softball team dropped two Atlantic Sun games to Troy State Tuesday night in Troy, Ala., 8-4 and 3-2 in eight innings. The Bulldogs are now 18-11 overall and 4-4 in the A-Sun. Samford completes an eight game conference road trip this Saturday at Garder Webb at 12 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently on an four game losing streak, losing four out of the last six games on the road. Samford is currently undefeated at home with a record of 9-0. Samford scored first in game one when Kelly Smith doubled in a run, but the Lady Trojans responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the third inning, Sarah Godfrey doubled to plate Trisha Holman and Deanna Resmondo for two RBI. Then Abi Casillo reached base with two outs and bases loaded on an error to send home a third run and make the score 4-2. Troy State, however, scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded and two outs, an error by the shortstop allowed two runs. The next batter hit a 2 RBI single and a wild pitch allowed the fifth run. The Trojans added another run in the sixth inning to win 8-4. Samford had nine hits and two errors, and Troy State had 11 hits and one error. Erin Landsburg took the loss for the Bulldogs. Her record is now 8-6. She lasted four and two- thirds innings allowing nine hits, seven runs, two earned runs, one walk and striking out two. Troy State jumped ahead first in the night cap. Erin Slater had a base hit to send Jenny Boyd across the plate.
In the fifth inning, Casillo drew a two out walk and Erin Hall tripled to send home the Bulldog
run. Resmondo then followed with a single to plate Hall and take the lead at 2-1.
The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when with bases loaded and two outs, a bad throw by the shortstop allowed a run to score. The Bulldogs did, however, throw out runners at the plate twice in the late innings. Casillo fired a shot from left field to catch a runner in the sixth, and Michelle Wright caught a runner in the seventh at home plate. In the bottom of the eighth, Slater reached base on an error by second base and stole second and third. Samford then intentionally walked the next two batters with one out to load the bases. But Sally Jones drew a walk to send in the winning run for a Troy State victory of 3-2. Samford had six hits and three errors in game two, and Troy State had nine hits and no errors in the night cap. Emilee Lewis was credited with the loss. She is now 7-3 for the season. She allowed nine hits, three runs, one earned run, struck out two batters and walked none. Kristi Curran was credited with both wins for Troy State in relief. She is now 7-4 for the season. |
