Softball Drops Twin-Bill At Chattanooga
March 22, 2001 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Samford Bulldogs dropped a softball double-header at Chattanooga on Thursday 2-1 and 8-2 at Frost Stadium. The Bulldogs (12-21) scored first in game one as Michelle Ashley drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to put Samford ahead 1-0. The lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when UTC's Angela Brewer singled home Dana Reed to tie the game. The Lady Mocs (21-13) took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Ashleigh Herman. Beth Alexander got the win by pitching 6.1 innings and striking out eight. Brianne Mertens (8-10) took the loss pitching six innings giving up two runs on seven hits and fanning three. Samford once again took an early lead in game two. Michelle Wright had a two-RBI double in the top of the first to score Ashley and Abi Casillo. The lead was short lived as Chattanooga scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the first off Samford starter Erin Landsburg (3-8). The Lady Mocs added two runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Jaci Welsh. UTC added the final two runs in the sixth inning on a two run homer by Brewer. Talya Trudell got the win for Chattanooga pitching a complete game and fanned six. Landsburg took the loss for Samford. Jennifer Morris pitched five innings giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out one.
Angela Bednark had a pair of singles in the opener and Janet Middleton added a double for the Bulldogs who will travel to Lafayette, La., on Saturday to face Nicholls State and Louisiana-Lafayette in the Janette Spell Memorial Tournament.
