Softball Shatters Scoring Records at Morris Brown
March 4, 2003 ATLANTA, Ga. - Sarah Godfrey and Michelle Wright each went 5-7 and combined for 10 RBI as Samford set its single-game scoring record in game one and did it again in game two as the Bulldogs swept a softball double header 18-0 and 21-0 Tuesday afternoon against Morris Brown. The Bulldogs (6-4) scored in every inning in both games including a school-record 13-run first inning in game two. Freshman Emilee Lewis pitched a shortened perfect game in the night cap as the game was called after just three innings. Lewis retired all nine batters she faced striking out four of them to improve to 2-1 on the season. Junior Erin Landsburg picked up the win in game one pitching five shutout innings giving up five hits and fanning six batters to move to 2-2 on the year. Samford got the scoring started early with six runs in the top of the first inning of the first game. Landsburg led off with a double and scored on a single by Godfrey. The next four batters all had hits and would come around to score to give Samford the early lead. The Bulldogs pounded out 19 hits in five innings in game one which was stopped because of the eight-run rule.
Deanna Resmondo led off game two with a triple and the Bulldogs sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning of the night-cap. The first five Samford batters had hits before Kelly Smith reached on an error as the first nine batters all reached base in the inning. When the inning was over the Bulldogs had 13 runs on 11 hits and Morris Brown had not batted yet. Samford scored twice in the second and six times in the third before the game was called. The Bulldogs 21 runs and 20 hits were both school records surpassing last season's 16-0 victory over Alabama State on Feb. 16.
Remondo finished the day 5-8. Trisha Holman went 5-8 with two doubles and two RBI, Angela Bednark went 4-6 with five RBI, Smith finished 5-8 with three RBI, Erin Hall went 5-6 with a pair of triples and five RBI, and Abi Casillo was 2-6 with five RBI. Samford will return to action on Wednesday as it travels to Starkville, Miss., to make up a double header that was rained out last week against Mississippi State. |
