Softball is shutout by Marshall, 6-0
March 2, 2003 Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Samford softball team was shutout by Marshall, 6-0, Sunday in its final game of the weekend at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Samford is now 4-4 on the season and went 3-3 for the tournament. The Bulldogs will travel Atlanta, Ga., on Tuesday to face Morris Brown in a double header at 3 p.m. and will also try to make up their postponed games against Mississippi State on Wednesday in Starkville, Miss. Marshall jumped ahead early in the top of the first inning with three runs. Jessica Williams led the game off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bulldog senior pitcher Amber Fuller then walked two batters to load the bases and a single to left field by Allison Webb scored Williams. Karri Britt then hit an infield single to short stop Kelly Smith to send Amanda Williams across the plate. The third run came on a close call by the umpire when Fuller threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded but apparently just missed the tag at home plate. Senior Michelle Wright was the first base runner for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second inning drawing a lead-off walk. However, her teammates would leave her stranded as the Thundering Herd retired the next three batters. Erin Landsburg walked lead-off batter Karri Britt for Marshall in the top of the fourth and Sara Spenia advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Courtney Kacenga put runners on the corners, and a single to left field by Jennifer Susman plated Britt and Kacenga to put Marshall up 5-0.
Trisha Holman laid down a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the fourth for Samford and collect Samford's first hit of the game. But, she was called out at third when Sarah Godfrey reached first on an error by the shortstop and the first baseman threw out Holman trying to take third.
The Thundering Herd added an unearned run to the tally in the top of the fifth when De'Shaun Drake singled to reach base safely and made it to second on a fielder's choice error by Kelly Smith. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third and Drake scored on a ground out to first base. In the top of the fifth inning, Landsburg singled to right field, but Kelly Smith grounded into a double play and Abi Casillo popped out to third base to quickly end the inning. Fuller took the loss for Samford, brining her record to 2-1 for the season. She lasted only one inning before being relieved. She gave up three hits, three runs, walked two and struck out two. Landsburg pitched the middle four innings scattering three hits, walking two and striking out two. Freshman Emilee Lewis finished the game for the Bulldogs going two innings only allowing one hit, striking out one and walking none. |
