Softball Take Two At Frost Classic

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Samford softball team won its first two games on Saturday at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bulldogs slipped past Tennessee Tech 4-3 in 11 innings in game one and run-ruled Tennessee State 9-1 in six innings in game two. The Bulldogs are now 4-2 for the season. They are scheduled to face tournament host Chattanooga at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday evening. Game one between Samford and Tennessee Tech was a pitcher's duel remaining scoreless going into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, pinch runner Erin Landsburg was placed on second base according to the International Tie Breaker rule. Landsburg scored the first run of the game after Deanna Resmondo reached first on a fielder's choice and got caught in a run down between first and second allowing Landsburg to cross the plate. Tennessee Tech did not let that score stand long scoring pinch runner Lori Bayless from second base on a single up the middle by Stephanie Dallmann tying the score again at 1-1. In the top of the ninth, Michelle Wright walked with two outs, and Angela Bednark singled through the left side and advanced to second on a throwing error by left field allowing Wright score and put Samford back on top, 2-1. However, Tech quickly tied the game up again in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly Jadryen Layne that scored Kacy Bennett. Resmondo picked up an RBI in the top of the 10th with a single up the middle to plate Kelly Smith. The Golden Eagles scored again in the bottom of the inning to send the game to the 11th inning.
Sarah Godfrey picked up the game-winning RBI for the Bulldogs with a double to center field to send home Erin Hall from second base and make the score 4-3.
Senior pitcher Amber Fuller went the distance for the Bulldogs improving her record to 2-0 with the win. She hurled 11 innings and had a career high 14 strikeouts. Godfrey led the team from the plate with two hits. The Bulldogs had a total of eight hits in the game. Samford got things started quickly in the second game when Godfrey singled with two out and Wright reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Angela Bednark then doubled to right center to score Godfrey and Wright. Landsburg then stepped up to the plate and singled to left field to send home Bednark from second base. Next, Bridgett Smith repeated Landsburg's hit to plate Landsburg and put the Bulldogs up 4-0. Tennessee Tech scored their lone run in the top of the third when DeAundrea Minor reached base on a throwing error by Bednark and scored when Natalie Rocha singled to right field. Wright added a run to the Bulldogs' total in the third inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. The homer was her third of the season and 11th of her career. Bednark hit a two run home run in the fifth inning to bring her RBI total for the game to four. The home run was her first of the season and the 15th of her career. The Bulldogs ended the game in the sixth inning when Resmondo and Trisha Holman both reached base on singles. Kelly Smith then doubled to right field to send home two runs and end the game with a score of 9-1. Freshman Emilee Lewis picked up her first win for the Bulldogs, making her record 1-1. She relieved Landsburg and threw four innings, gave up three hits, walked three and struck out three. Landsburg hurled the first two innings, allowing only one hit, walking one and striking out two. Bednark led the team at the plate going 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Holman and Godfrey each had two hits and the team had a total of 13 hits. Wright is leading the team riding a six-game hitting streak, and Holman is close behind her with a five game streak. |
