Softball Posts 1-4 Mark at Rebel/Easton Tournament
Feb. 19, 2001 OXFORD, Miss. - Michelle Ashley and Janet Middleton were named to the all-tournament team as the Samford Bulldogs posted a 1-4 record at the Rebel/Easton Tournament hosted by Ole Miss over the weekend. The Bulldogs only victory was a 4-1 win over Ole Miss on Saturday. Samford (2-10) was led by Ashley who hit .400 (6-15) for the weekend. She went 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the win over Ole Miss. She also went 2-3 in a 5-3 loss to the University of Evansville on Sunday. Middleton earned her second-straight all-tournament selection by going 2-3 against Evansville and playing solid defensive at third base for the Bulldogs. Freshman pitcher Erin Landsburg picked up her first collegiate win against Ole Miss as she threw a complete game giving up just one run on eight hits. She struck out three and walked no one. Samford opened the tournament against Evansville. The Purple Aces scored four runs in the third inning to go on the a 6-1 victory. In the second game, the Bulldogs met the host Rebels. Samford scored two runs in the fourth and added two more in the seventh inning for the 4-1 win. Ashley, Jennifer Graham, Abi Casillo, and Linda Tehranchi all had RBI for the Bulldogs. Michell Wright had a double and scored a run and Casillo had her second triple of the year and also scored a run.
The Bulldogs dropped their final three games of the tournament, all on Sunday. Southwest Missouri State defeated Samford 4-1 in the first game of the day. Angela Bednark's bases-loaded three-RBI double in the second game was not enough as Evansville took a 5-3 win. In the finale, Ole Miss scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand the Bulldogs a 2-0 defeat.
Senior Brianne Mertens pitched her best game of the season against Ole Miss in the loss. She only gave up three hits in 7.1 innings and struck out eight batters. Samford will travel to Statesboro, Ga., next weekend for the Reebox Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs will face Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee State, and Coastal Carolina in the three-day event. |
