Samford Falls to Maryland in Consolation Game
Feb. 10, 2002 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Maryland Terrapins defeated Samford University 4-0 in the consolation game of the Bama Bash Sunday morning at the Alabama Softball Complex. Maryland's Lauren Pollock hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and Samantha Sweeny had a two-RBI double and scored on an RBI double by Jen Peel in the fifth to improve the Terps to 3-2 on the season. Monica Cyphert picked up the win for Maryland pitching five innings and giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three. Jessica Aditays pitched the final two innings also giving up a hit and a walk and fanning three. Samford dropped to 0-5 on the season after being shutout for the second-straight game. Erin Landsburg took the loss to drop to 0-3. She gave up five hits over five innings. She walked two and struck out three. All three runs in the fifth inning were unearned because of a costly Samford error, which prolonged the inning. Amber Fuller came in a pitched two scoreless innings giving up a walk and striking our two batters. Samford's bats were quit for the second game in a row. The Bulldogs managed just a fifth inning single by Michelle Dickey and a seventh inning single by Janet Middleton. Samford had three hits in its last two games. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the five games of the tournament and committed seven errors.
The Bulldogs will open the home portion of their schedule with the Samford Invitational next weekend at Bulldogs Field. Samford will host Alabama State and Wagner on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
