TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Angela Bednark hit a sixth-inning shot over the center field wall 225 feet from home plate but that was all the offense Samford could muster as the Bulldogs dropped their season-opener 4-1 to Evansville at the Bama Bash hosted by the University of Alabama.

Evansville (1-1) scored three runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth as Katie Markle won her first start of the season. Markle pitched seven innings giving up four hits, one run, and struck out three. Jamie Davison went 4-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI and Haven Shank went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the Purple Aces offensively.

Bednark led the Bulldogs in home runs last season with five. Her sixth inning blast was her first of the season and the sixth of her career. She is now fifth all-time in home runs for Samford. Erin Landsburg took the loss for the Bulldogs. She gave up three earned runs and 11 hits over seven innings of work. She struck out two and walked three. Dana Saffles and Michelle Dickey each had singles for the Bulldogs.

Samford will return to action at 6:30 p.m. has it plays 13th ranked Alabama.
