Bulldogs' Cook Named SoCon Player Of The Week
Nov. 3, 2009
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford sophomore Lauren Cook was named the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week Tuesday for all games played Oct. 27-Nov.3. Cook tallied three points in a key 3-1 road victory at Chattanooga last week. The win clinched a berth in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer championship for the Bulldogs. The Conyers, Ga., native picked up an assist on Cindy Spikers' goal which gave Samford a 1-0 lead against the Mocs in the 23rd minute. With Samford up 2-1 late in the first half, Cook then scored a goal of her own to give the Bulldogs their decisive 3-1 lead. It was Cook's first goal of the season and her second assist of the 2009 campaign. Cook proved to be the third Samford player to earn weekly SoCon honors this season. On Sept. 15, goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead was named the SoCon Player of the Week, while junior forward Leah Leppert garnered the award on Oct. 20. The Bulldogs are tied with Furman for the most individual awards from the same team. So far this year, Cook has appeared in 13 games and has earned five starts. She has collected four points on the season with three of them coming in last week's game. Samford (12-1-4, 7-1-3 SoCon) earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. The Bulldogs will face second-seeded College of Charleston on Friday at 4 p.m. (CST). The prestigious four-team tournament will be held at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Other top performers this week were College of Charleston's Katie Tate, Davidson's Kyri Bye-Nagel, Georgia Southern's Sara Oland and UNC Greensboro's Tabitha Padgett. 2009 SoCon Players of the Week Sept. 1 - Alexa Jones, Furman
