SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford University soccer team will play its 11th game away from home in 14 matchups this season Sunday as the Bulldogs square off against the Wofford Terriers at 1 p.m. (CT), at Snyder Field (2,250).

Samford (4-8-1, 3-1-1 Southern Conference) is 1-7 in road games this year and 2-8 when playing away from Bulldog Field. The Bulldogs picked up their first road victory of the 2008 campaign last Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph at Georgia Southern.

"Sunday games in this league are tough and especially if they're on the road," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "Wofford is a very challenging team and they are going to be committed to playing hard and aiming for victory. We've played there before and we know that it's a tough environment."

Samford heads into Sunday's game with a full head of steam after picking up a momentous 3-0 victory against Furman on Friday. In the shutout victory, junior Amber Cress scored a pair of goals and sophomore Leah Leppert added a score late in the second half.

The Bulldogs' freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead made six saves in the shutout and picked up her first collegiate victory. Samford's 6-foot-3 native of Hattiesburg, Miss., started the game and played the first 88 minutes in goal. She was later replaced by redshirt junior Jenna Sturgill.

"We have a nice little streak going on and we'd like to keep it going," Yelton said. "We're going to have to come out and play our best soccer and I know that Wofford's players will have the same thing on their minds as well."

Wofford (2-7-4, 1-3-1 SoCon) is also riding a wave of confidence as it heads into Sunday's match. On Friday, the Terriers posted a 4-2 road victory at Chattanooga. In the win, Wofford's Cassie Rex tallied a hat trick with one first-half goal and two second-half scores.

With Rex's standout performance, the Terriers' junior from Boone, N.C., moved into a first-place tie for the team's lead in goals with freshman Maggie McLaughlin. Both players have scored three goals this season.

Sunday's matchup between Samford and Wofford will be the third all-time meeting between the teams.

The Bulldogs own a 1-0-1 advantage in the series and earned a 3-0 win in the last meeting between the teams in 2005. In 2003, the teams squared off for the first time in school history and fought to a 0-0 draw in Spartanburg, S.C.

Following Samford's SoCon road matchup against Wofford on Sunday, the Bulldogs will next be in action Friday against the College of Charleston Cougars. The matchup will be the first of two-straight Samford home games and is slated to begin at 7 p.m. (CT), at Bulldog Field.
