Soccer Set To Play Cross-Town Rival UAB Sunday

Sept. 13, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University soccer team will continue its arduous eight-game, season-opening road trip Sunday at 4 p.m., as the Bulldogs square off against the UAB Blazers in the final match of the 2008 UAB Nike Classic held at West Campus Field.

Samford (1-5) heads into Sunday's cross-town matchup looking to end a two-game losing streak. In their previous two matches, the Bulldogs have dropped heartbreaking 1-0 decisions against Southeastern Conference-opponents Arkansas 1-0 (2OT) and Alabama 1-0.

In last week's 1-0 loss to Arkansas, the Razorbacks scored the game-winning goal with only 2:22 remaining in the double-overtime period. On Friday, Samford outshot Alabama 9-5 in the second half of play, but failed to score a goal for the fourth time this season.

UAB (1-5) enters Sunday's game with a full head of steam after the Blazers picked up a thrilling 1-0 victory over Wright State on Friday.

In the win, UAB's first of the 2008 season, freshman forward Tiffini Turpin took a shot with three seconds left in overtime. The ball was saved but bounced out off of Wright State goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson.

The Blazers' Donya Barsalona gathered the rebound and aimed a shot in the back of the net with just one second left on the clock to secure the 1-0 victory. The goal marked Barsalona's second score of the season.

Prior to UAB's win over Wright State on Friday, the Blazers opened the season with five-straight losses to Clemson 1-0, Auburn 1-0, USF 1-0, Kansas 5-2 and Nebraska 3-0.

Last season, in the first-ever meeting between Samford and UAB, the Bulldogs earned a 1-0 overtime victory as Natalie Fleming scored the golden goal during the seventh minute of overtime.

On the game-winning score, Cassie Applegate broke away from a pair of Blazer defenders to find herself one-v-one with goalkeeper Kate Blankenship. Applegate sliced a shot to the far post, but Blankenship made a diving save to her right. After the deflection, Fleming cut inside and slammed home the deciding goal into the right corner of the net.

Following Samford's in-state matchup against UAB on Sunday, the Bulldogs will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m., as they square off with the Auburn Tigers in Auburn, Ala.
