Bulldogs Win OT Thriller
Nov. 2, 2001
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore midfielder Kelly Christoffer's shot off a rebound found the back of the net in the 117th minute to lift Samford over Tennessee Tech, 1-0 in double overtime Friday night at the Samford Soccer Field. The Bulldogs improved to 8-9-2 while the Golden Eagles fell to 12-6 on the season. Christoffer's second game-winning goal of the season came a few seconds after the Bulldogs were awarded a free kick after a Tennessee Tech foul. Heather Pomper sent a cross into traffic in the box. The Golden Eagles blocked the ball away but sophomore Hayley Kolb found it and took a shot. Kolb's shot on goal was knocked away by Tech goalkeeper Carly King but Christoffer got the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net. "It was our seniors last home game, and I just really wanted to play well for them and win this game for them," Christoffer said. "The ball just popped out. I didn't even think about it. I just went and try to do what I can do. I think the goalie was in the middle because I kicked it right inside the post." The Bulldogs had a chance to win at the end of regulation. Pomper took a shot with 30 seconds remaining and beat King at the far left post. King crawled and stopped the ball from crossing the line to keep the game scoreless and send it into overtime. Samford had another chance at the end of the first overtime. Lindsay Shanks' shot from the right side ended up wide of the goal, sending it into double overtime. During regulation, Tennessee Tech only broke through Samford's defense for five shots. The Golden Eagles had two scoring threats on indirect kicks but senior goalkeeper Carrie Ollom stopped both shots.
Samford out shot Tennessee Tech, 32-7 and held the Golden Eagles to just one shot in the first half. King finished the game with 12 saves for the Golden Eagles while Ollom recorded four saves in her third shutout of the season.
"We had a fabulous week of practice. The girls are happy. We were down for a while. We couldn't have ended it any better," Ollom said. "It was cute after Toff (Christoffer) scored. She ran to me and said that was for me and that means a lot me. These girls mean tons to me, and it's hard for me to leave this field, but at the same time I couldn't have ended it any better. Now, I'm looking forward to tournament, because after this, I think we have a chance to possibly win it. Senior Christa Jones also played her last home game of her career. Jones took two shots on goal. "I'm just happy we were able to end they way we did. I'm really excited about going to the tournament and we played such an awesome game tonight to get ready for it," Jones said. "I'm really excited to be ending my career with a Florida trip." The Bulldogs will play in the Atlantic Sun Tournament next week in Orlando, Fla. Tennessee Tech will play in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament next week. |
