Late Goal lifts Georgia State over Samford
Oct. 18, 2001
ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State's Lindsey Griffin scored in the 86th minute as the Lady Panthers defeated Samford, 1-0 in an Atlantic Sun conference game Thursday afternoon. Samford fell to 3-4-1 in the conference while Georgia State improved to 4-4-1. Griffin scored the lone goal of the game in the closing minutes. She took a pass from Jill Denslow and rifled a shot from 18 yards out to put Georgia State ahead. Both teams had opportunities in a scoreless first half. Freshman Lindsay Shanks almost put Samford on the board first. Her shot hit the crossbar at 16:34. The ball ricocheted high above GSU goalkeeper's Jennifer Espinal and landed in her hands near the goal line. Georgia State's Ashley Edwards nearly scored a few minutes earlier when she moved in on senior goalkeeper Carrie Ollom but several Bulldog defenders helped Ollom stop the breakaway. Edwards had another good chance to score on a header in the 64th minute, but Ollom stopped the shot from going in. Samford was out shot 9-7. Ollom recorded four saves in the loss for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs continue their conference road trip when they travel to Campbell Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (EST).
