JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore forward Hayley Kolb scored in the fourth minute of the first half and Jacksonville's Erika Chapman scored in the fourth minute of the second half as the Bulldogs and Dolphins battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime on a windy afternoon in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs moved to 2-0-1 in Atlantic Sun play while the Dophins moved to 2-2-1.

"I felt we played well enough to win but I'm very pleased with the tie," Samford head coach Barry Spitzer said. "I'm pleased with the whole trip. We're going away with a win and a tie in conference. Compared to last year's team, we have a stronger team. There are still things we need to refine but I thought we played well."

The Bulldogs were able to avenge last year's 2-0 loss in Birmingham. Samford needed just four minutes into the game to jump out on top. Sophomore Lisa Robishaw passed to Kolb whose shot was blocked but went right back to her. Kolb, then, rifled another shot from the top of box over the head of Jacksonville's goalie to give Samford a 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville tied the game up in the 48th minute when Chapman nailed a shot into the left corner of the goal from the top of the box.

It appeared the Bulldogs had regained the lead in the 55th minute. Kolb took a cross from Heather Pomper and outbattled the Jacksonville defender in the box. Her shot beat the Dolphin goalie for the go-ahead goal but Kolb was called for a push-off, negating the goal.

The Dolphins had several corner kicks in the wanning minutes of regulation but Bulldog goalkeeper Carrie Ollom stole several crosses out of the air to end scoring threats.

In the first overtime, Samford had a shot for the win when Kolb's corner kick beat Jacksonville's goalkeeper Stephanie Fowler. The Bulldogs had two shot attempts but both failed.

Both defenses stiffened the rest of the way as the game ended in a tie. Kolb's goal was her sixth of the season. Ollom finished with six saves. Jacksonville outshot the Bulldogs 27-11 and had a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks.

"I was pleased with the way Carrie played. Hayley's playing well for us. I thought her and our other forwards worked well together. That was a great goal and it was a great goal she had taken away," Spitzer said.

The Bulldogs now get ready for a four-game home-stand in conference play as Mercer and Troy State come to Samford Soccer Field next week. Samford hosts Mercer Thursday at 6 p.m.
