Bulldogs blank Lipscomb

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford midfielder Jessica D'Amico scored the Bulldogs first goal in the 32nd minute and freshman Lindsay Shanks and sophomore Hayley Kolb each added a goal in the second half as the Bulldogs blanked Lipscomb, 3-0 at home Thursday night. Samford evened its record to 3-3 with the win. "When we got our momentum up, we played much better, " Samford head coach Barry Spitzer said. "We started off a little flat but we picked things up. Things we worked on in practice came out in the game." D'Amico's first goal of the season highlighted a first half, which saw the home team take control early. The Bulldogs outshot the Lady Bison 17-1 in the first half. D'Amico broke the scoreless tie when she one-timed a right-footed shot from 16 yards out off a cross from freshman Heidi Kearns to make the score 1-0. Kearns took the cross from Kelly Christoffer over the middle and passed it to D'Amico over on the left side. D'Amico knocked it in for her first goal of the season. Lipscomb's lone threat in the first half came in the 28th minute. Amanda Scott nailed a high shot from 20 yards out but freshman goalie Cassie Coggins got her right hand on the ball to knock the ball over the goal and force a corner kick. The Bulldogs blocked the corner kick away and went the other way with to end the Lady Bison threat.
Samford had another opportunity to score right before halftime. With 18 seconds remaining, freshman Christina Dortch crossed the ball over to Kearns who was open in the box but Kearn's header sailed wide right for the Bulldogs' last shot of the half.
Lipscomb threatened again in the 60th minute of play. Scott took a penalty kick right outside the box but freshman goalkeeper Crystal Royal caught the ball for her first career save. The Bulldogs' offense continued to produce shots in the second half and broke through Lipscomb's defense for another goal in the 72nd minute. Heather Pomper's cross found Lisa Robishaw, but Lipscomb's goalkeeper Jennifer Brittingham blocked it. Dortch took the deflection in the box and passed it over to Hayley Kolb who put it into the goal in traffic giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Freshman Lindsay Shanks scored the Bulldogs final goal of the night in the 80th minute. Lisa Robishaw found Shanks over the middle and Shanks right-footed a 10-yard shot into the goal to make for the final outcome. Samford outshot Lipscomb 44-3 for the game. Brittingham recorded 17 saves for the Lady Bison in the loss while Bulldog freshman goalies Coggins and Crystal Royal combined for two saves. "I was proud of our freshman goalkeepers. They made a couple of big saves in there for us," Spitzer said. The Bulldogs travel to Kentucky this weekend. Samford plays Murray State Saturday at 1 p.m. and Western Kentucky Sunday at 2 p.m. |
