BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mitzi Mahan outshot Murray State 10-9 and scored the game-winning goal as Samford (3-2) edged the Racers 2-1 at Samford soccer field Saturday.

Samford (3-2) was again led by Mahan, whose winner came in the 62nd minute as she ran under an assist from Kelly Christoffer and beat a defender one-on-one for her sixth goal of the season. Mahan also added an assist on Samford's first goal scored by freshman Haley Kolb in the 40th minute, a goal answering Murray State's only score a minute and half earlier.

"Things are clicking along well for us right now," said head coach Barry Spitzer. "We are improving every game, and building on those changes and improvements every week. We still need to do a better job of finishing when we have scoring opportunities, but today we beat a solid Murray State team. I'm excited because not only are our seniors like Mitzi Mahan playing well, but our freshmen are also making it very difficult for us to choose our starters every week. That's a good problem to have."

The Bulldogs outshot the Racers 20-9, and Samford goalkeeper Carrie Ollom was only forced to make two saves thanks to Samford's defense. Samford opens its Trans America Athletic Conference season next Saturday against Mercer in Macon, Ga.
