MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Samford freshman Lindsay Shanks made her debut for the Bulldogs by scoring two goals and assisting two others as Samford picked up their first win of the season with a 5-0 shutout of Montevallo at Falcon Field. Shanks scored her first career goal 20 minutes into the game. Midfielder Kelly Christoffer crossed the ball over to Shanks, who knocked it in to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first period of play. Shanks was one of four freshmen who started for the Bulldogs.

"I was pleased with all our freshmen who played today. It shows we have a lot of depth," head coach Barry Spitzer said. " Lindsay Shanks certainly had a good game. That's why we recruited her. She's doing what she should be doing."

Shanks scored her second goal 58 minutes into the game. Midfielder Wendi Woods made a pass over the middle to Shanks, who kicked it passed Montevallo goalkeeper Adrianne Peters for the Bulldogs fourth goal of the game.

"It felt good. I really couldn't expect very much because it was my first game in college. I just came out and played my heart out," said Shanks. "I hope it's a sign of things to come. When I scored the first one, I was just thinking, let's get another one and I did."

Samford controlled the game from the kickoff. Hayley Kolb's 10th career goal was the Bulldogs first of 2001. Samford midfielder Lisa Stucki passed to Kolb right before she collided with Peters. Kolb tapped in the ball to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Samford added three goals in the second period. At the 57:19 mark, freshman Heidi Kearns was on the scoring end of a Shanks' pass. Kearns squared up in the middle of the box and kicked her first career goal past the Montevallo goalie for a 3-0 Bulldog lead.

Lisa Robishaw scored the Bulldogs final goal of the night with a little more than 3 ½ minutes left in the contest. After Shanks' shot on goal ricocheted back, Robishaw kicked it into the net for the 5-0 advantage.

"We have a lot more tricks in the bag. We started a little bit slow but at halftime, when we got things sorted and figured out what we needed to do. I think that's when we started to play well," said Spitzer.

For the game, Samford out-shot Montevallo 23-6 with 12 shots on goals. Samford's defense allowed only two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Carrie Ollom finished the game with two saves.

The Bulldogs will be on the road this weekend. Samford plays at Bowling Green State Friday and Wright State Sunday.
