Women's Golf Takes Momentum To New Mexico State Tournament

Oct. 12, 2008

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Samford University women's golf team will continue its record-setting 2008 fall season this week at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational hosted by New Mexico State University. The three-day event will be held at the NMSU Golf Course Monday through Wednesday.

The 2008 Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational will feature 18 teams. Along with Samford, the field also includes Hawai'i, Oklahoma, Nevada, Missouri, Baylor, UC Davis, UTEP, Kansas State, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, UC Irvine, Oral Roberts, Cincinnati, Eastern Washington and North Texas.

The format of the competition will be 54 holes - 18 each day. The team lineups include five players, counting the top four scores. All rounds will begin with a shotgun start, Monday and Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (CT) and Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. (CT).

In Samford's most recent outing, the Bulldogs earned the championship title at the 2008 Fred Marx Invitational on Sept. 30.

At the two-day event hosted by the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Samford turned in a final-round score of 296 to finish in first place at the Bayou Desiard Country Club. The Bulldogs won the 11-team tournament by 21 strokes.

Samford's third-round score of 296 set a course record at the Bayou Desiard Country Club. The Bulldogs have already shattered a number of records this season, including the 18-hole, 36-hole and 54-hole marks at the Fred Marx Invitational.

Samford's 2008-09 roster is comprised of two seniors, three juniors and one freshman.

The Bulldogs will be led this season by seniors Kellie O'Connell and Maria Troche, as well as juniors Heather Arnold, Sara Hunt and Katelyn Stanier. Samford's lone underclassman on the roster this year is true freshman Sarah Butts. Butts is a native of Carrollton, Ga.

Following Monday's opening 18 holes at the 2008 Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational, the Samford women's golf team will return to action Tuesday for second-round action beginning at 10:30 a.m. (CT), at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
