Samford's Woodie Eubanks Win Alabama State Mid-Amateur

Sept. 30, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks did a little more than coach on the golf course this weekend. Eubanks won the Alabama State Mid-Amateur Tournament held at The Ledges Country Club in Huntsville, Ala., and claimed the Alabama State Player of the Year award on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Eubanks need to finish second or better to win the Player of the Year award for Alabama. He shot 77 in the first round which put him in 12th place. In round two, Eubanks shot 69 and he rounded out the final round with a 65 to win by two strokes and claim the outright Player of the Year award.

Eubanks turned 33 years old on the final day of the tournament.

"This was exciting not only to come back and win on my birthday shooting 65, but to also win the Player of the Year award for the whole state of Alabama," Eubanks said. "It was a great 33rd birthday."

Eubanks' women's team won the Fred Marx Invitational on Tuesday by 21 strokes. The team's third-round score of 296 set a course record at the Bayou Desiard Country Club in Monroe, La. Two weeks ago, the Samford women placed fourth in the Western Carolina Invite. Next up for the Samford women is a three-day tournament hosted by New Mexico State.

The Samford men opened the season with a ninth place finish in the North Texas Invite and followed that performance up with a 14th place finish in the Francis Marion Tournament. Up next for the men is a competition with new Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern in the Georgia Southern Invitational, Oct. 5-7.
