Women's Golf Earns Second-Place Finish At UAB Fall Beach Bash

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Samford women's golf team recorded its second-consecutive top-three finish Tuesday at the 2008 UAB Fall Beach Bash held at The Peninsula Golf & Raquet Club. The Bulldogs placed second in this week's event after recently earning a third-place finish in the LDR Investments Intercollegiate on Oct. 21. Samford fired a second-round score of 303 on Tuesday to register its second-place performance. The Bulldogs finished the two-day competition with a total team score of 603 and was only six shots behind the tournament-champion Columbia University. Columbia concluded the UAB Fall Beach Bash with a two-round score of 597. During the 2008 fall tournament season, Samford competed in a total of five tournaments and tallied four top-five finishes. So far this year, the Bulldogs have placed first, second, third and fourth. Samford's Sara Hunt earned fourth place at this week's UAB Fall Beach Bash. She landed her second top-five finish in the last two tournaments and was one of three Bulldogs to register back-to-back top-10 performances. Also joining Hunt in the top 10 on Tuesday were Samford's junior Katelyn Stanier and senior Maria Troche. Stanier fired a 74 in the second round and finished in a two-way tie for seventh place. Troche, the Bulldogs' talented native of Asuncion, Paraguay, carded a second-round score of 77 and earned a ninth-place finish. Rounding out the top five players for Samford were freshman Sarah Butts and junior Heather Arnold. Both Bulldogs earned top-50 finishes and were placed 22nd and 41st, respectively. Columbia's Stevy Loy fired a tournament-best 67 on Tuesday to win the individual title. She finished the two-day competition with a 2-under 142.
Loy earned the medalist honors of the 2008 UAB Fall Beach Bash, while UAB's Christina Wentworth (145), Belmont's Lorie Warren (145), Samford's Hunt (148), Indiana State's Kayley Bodine (149) and Jacksonville State's Laura Cutler (149) also earned all-tournament honors. The 2008 UAB Fall Beach Bash was Samford's final competition of the fall season. The Bulldogs will next be in action Feb. 21-23 in the annual Birmingham-Southern Spring Challenge to be held in Birmingham, Ala. |
