CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Samford's women's golf team sits in 16th place out of 24 teams after one round at the Western Carolina Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate at the Waynesville Country Club. Kelly Stout led the Bulldogs with a first-round 78.

Stout shot a 1-under on the back nine to pace Samford. Sara Gossum shot 79. Kelly Villarreal shot 80. Tricia Harlow shot 81. Christine Sparks shot 88.

"I am pleased with the scores overall," coach Ian Thompson said. "With several teams bunched close together, we could make a move up in the standings in the final round."

Just ten strokes separate the Bulldogs, currently in 16th place, from fifth. The final round is Tuesday morning.
