Hunt Climbs To Sixth Place; Bulldogs Remain 16th At New Mexico State

Oct. 14, 2008

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Samford University women's golf team fired a second-round score of 316 on Tuesday at the 2008 Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate held at the New Mexico State University Golf Course. Following their best round of the tournament, the Bulldogs remained in 16th place.

Samford's Sara Hunt, a junior from Columbia, Tenn., carded a 75 on Tuesday and improved to sixth place in the tournament standings. The Bulldogs' transfer from Birmingham-Southern is only seven strokes behind the leader, Julia Potter of Missouri, heading into the final day of competition.

Sarah Butts also turned in a team-best score of 75 on Tuesday. Samford's true freshman from Carrollton, Ga., owns the team's second-best total of the week with a 160 (85-75). She is followed by fellow-Bulldogs Katelyn Stanier (77-84--161), Heather Arnold (84-82--166) and Maria Troche (88-84--172).

As a team, Samford's second-round score of 316 was four strokes better than its opening-round tally of 320. The Bulldogs enter the third-and-final round of competition with a team score of 636.

UC-Irvine remained in first place Tuesday by shooting a 302 in the second round for a total team score of 595. Oklahoma sits in second place with 598, while Baylor rounds out the top three at 601.

The Samford University women's golf team will resume play in the 2008 Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs compete in the final round of the event held at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
